1/8/2024 0 Comments Simon the zealot![]() We have already taken note of how he referred to Simon in Luke 6:15. But in either case, he would have preferred the Greek language to Hebrew anyway. Keep in mind that a Grecian was a Jew who had been raised in a Gentile culture. Some have concluded that Luke was either Gentile or a Grecian himself. So, calling Simon a Canaanite was not a reference to his home of record but to his political leanings. Matthew and Mark were simply using the Hebrew word but Luke just used the Greek word, “zelotes”, since his intended reader, Theophilus, was a Gentile anyway. The word “Canaanite” actually comes from a Hebrew word, kana” which means “ardent” or “fervent”. But this doesn’t make any sense because he is also called a zealot and zealots didn’t like Gentiles very much.Īctually, he was neither from Cana nor was he a Gentile. Others would suggest this means he was of Gentile descent. Some say that he is called the Canaanite because he is from Cana of Galilee. But does he really have more than one name? So once again, we find a man with more than one name. Luke 6:15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, But Luke records his name a little bit differently: In both of these lists, we find a man who is called, “Simon the Canaanite”. Mark 3:16-19 And Simon he surnamed Peter 17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder: 18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite, 19 And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house. In this case, we have the list of the apostles as recorded by Matthew. Sometimes, while reading lists of names, places, or things, we kind of zone out and miss some of the finer details. Matthew 10:2-4 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother 3 Philip, and Bartholomew Thomas, and Matthew the publican James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus 4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
